Pied French Bulldog with indoor pet potty

After our last blog post, we have had several people write in asking, how long does it take to potty train a dog?  Can you post more puppy potty training tips? How often do puppies poop? How often to puppies pee? This list goes on and on…

As you would imagine the answers to these questions are not the same for every dog.  It varies from dog to dog.

So let’s answer some questions…

How long does it take to potty train a dog?

If you are potty training a puppy to use pads, a piddle place, etc. this should take less than a week.  However, a lot of dogs do not like to poop in the same spot that they pee when they are puppies.  So when I say this should take less than a week, I am primarily talking about peeing.  Do not scald them or punish them if they pee off the pad.  Simply reward them when they do use the pee pad / Piddle Place and get excited, using words like “Good Boy!” “Good Potty!”, etc.  You want them to know that it is OK to use the bathroom, but that it is not OK to poop or pee wherever they want.

Associating a word with the pee pad or Piddle Place is the best option.  My humans chose the word “potty”.  When they sensed I was going to use the bathroom they would point to the pee pad or Piddle Place and say “Go Potty”.  Sometimes I would begin circling and they would pick me up and put me on the designated area.  This comes in handy later when you begin training your puppy to pee outside.

Repetition is key and rewarding your puppy in also incredibly important.  My personal recommendation for potty training a puppy is utilizing something called the Piddle Place.  It saves you a ton of money purchasing potty pads and is extremely easy to clean.  It is also a great permanent solution for indoor dogs or people with apartments or condos.

Now if you are looking to train  your puppy to use the bathroom outside while on walks, please refer to our last blog post which can be found HERE.  There are some great tips on how to make this happen.

Moving on to answer the following questions:

How Often Do Puppies Poop? and How Often Do Puppies Pee?

Think of puppies and dogs as humans, when humans drink two glasses of water, they typically have to pee.  When humans eat a meal or two, well…you get the point.

When you have a young puppy and you are feeding them three times a day, you can expect your puppy to poop 3-6 times a day.  This slows down when they hit about 6-7 months and will turn into 2-3 times a day.

When training your new puppy, you have to realize that many puppies pee A LOT! Sometimes in small amounts and other times in large amounts.  Expect your puppy to be peeing between 5-10 times a day for the first 6 months or so.
